Root Planning and Scaling

One type of a very deep dental cleaning is root planning and scaling. Root planning and scaling are two different procedures but usually go hand in hand for those with gum disease or severe forms of gingivitis. Root planning smoothes irregular areas on the root surface and also removes any calculus that is remaining after the scaling process. Scaling removes this calculus - also known as tartar. Calculus is plaque that has hardened over time. If you are in the early stages of gum disease, it is imperative to consider this procedure in order to prevent future damage and consequences. In other situations, root planning and scaling may be a necessity prior to dental surgery.

The root planning and scaling procedure is done with a combination of hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers. The ultrasonic scalers are either air powered or electric and they come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Different teeth and different surface textures require the use of different and specific instruments. Although this procedure can usually be done in one visit, it may sometimes require multiple visits in more severe stages of gum disease.

For two to three days after the treatment, you may have some soreness and be sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. This discomfort can be treated with over the counter pain relievers. It may also be necessary to use an antiseptic mouth rinse after a root planning and scaling procedure.
