Dental Crown Procedure


A dental crown is a cap that goes over a damaged tooth. A dental crown can restore a tooth's size, shape, andstrength, or just improve the overall appearance of the tooth. A dental crown be made up of ceramic, metal, resin, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, just to name a few of the different options.

A dental crown may be needed to:

  • Cover a dental implant

  • Cover any discolored or misshaped teeth

  • Restore a broken tooth

  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Provide protection for a weak tooth

The dental crown procedure consists of a molded impression of the tooth being made and sent to a dental laboratory. While the final, permanent crown is being made at the dental laboratory, a temporary crown is put on to protect the tooth in the meantime. During a later dental visit, the permanent crown is cemented onto the tooth.

If you have had a dental crown procedure done in the past, it may be time to have it replaced. If you have an old dental crown that is made of metal, you may benefit from having it replaced with a porcelain or ceramic crown. Otherwise, it may still be necessary to replace a dental crown after 10 to 15 years. If you have a dental crown that is at least 10 years, it is important to visit our dentists to discuss whether or not it may be time to replace it soon.
